BOOK CLOTH

Book cloth was originally designed as a cheap, cotton-based alternative to leather, and has since become extremely popular as a cover material. It can be used to cover the whole book or in combination with other materials such as cover papers.

Book cloth and buckram are cotton-based sheet materials and are sold by length from the roll. Book cloth is lined with a fine paper layer that helps keep the material from misshaping and the glue from penetrating the cloth. There are a large number of book cloths available in different colors and finishes, although they are generally limited to specialist bookbinding suppliers. Buckram has a waterproof finish so can be wiped down.

COVER PAPER

Cover papers are an alternative to the cotton-based materials and provide a more decorative finish to a book. Many papers are manufactured or handmade specifically for the purpose, but it is also possible to use non-specific papers such as wrapping paper to cover your books.

Cover papers are thinner and more malleable than book cloth and so tend to be much easier to apply.
